HOW MANY BPM?

(Installation/performance)

How Many BPM? is a installation made of two transitions face to face, equipped with microphones (materials and dimensions are variables). During the performance a skater-metronom goes back and forth and gives the tempo to guest musiciens.

The project How Many Bpm? started in 2014 in the basement of the parisian gallery l'Hermitage when visual artist Iouri Camicas, at the initiative of this cultural place, met Youri Fernandez, co founder and member of the french-berliner collective FLVR SERIES.

HMBPM? is using skateboarding as a mere tool of creation and both artists conceived a performance in which a skateboarder is carried by the on-going movements of a sculpture following the shapes of a ramp. The repetitive movements of the skateboarder create a rhythm turning the body into a metronome and imposing a tempo. Various musicians are invited to participate and to create a sound universe accompanying the performance.

After various interpretations the project took in 2016 a step further by being selected Prize-Winner of the Art & Music Festival organized by Baleapop and the Collective Moï Moï. The mini ramp built out of concrete in the basement of the parisian gallery became an architectural work made out of wood and synthetic glass and with a size of 4 meters wide for 6 meters high.

HMBPM? wins the public support by offering them at the same time a spectacular and contemplative performance. Following the festival and the success of HMBPM? both collectives FLVR and MOI MOI decided to pursue the project and to record the tracks created during the performances. The vinyle is available here.

In 2018, HMBPM? was presented in Bruxelles with a new shape made of metal and piezzos, in collaboration with l'Oiseau Bleu Collective and Air LQD (techno-indus).

After being presented in Cognac at the Martell Art Fondation in 2019, HMBPM?  wooden structure is still available for new experiments and collaborations. We also love to create new shapes and sounds.

ABOUT US

IOURI CAMICAS was born in 1988. Lives and works in Bayonne.
Graduated from Art Décoratifs (ENSAD) school in Paris in 2015, he created an experimental studio of creation and exhibitions in the city, l'Hermitage between 2013 and 2016.
The most part of his work deals with physical and narrative experiences around wood species, concrete and light. The study of infinitesimal and infinitely large scales in regard to precious and rough materials takes him to develop many mediums as the sculpture, drawing, sound designing/composing, art installations
and happenings.

YOURI FERNANDEZ develops his art threw various disciplines. He loves to explore a multimedia software as much as drawing plants or skateboarding on tempo.

In 2008 he started to make his passions coexist by organizing transdisciplinary events.
